PAN IIT2008 global confernce a meeting of IIT alumni was organised in Chennai.The star speaker was Dr RAGHURAM RAJAN,Economic advisor to the Prime minister.Dr Rajan, an alumnus Of IIT DELHI,prefaced his speech by saying that when he was an IIT student they used to go around to tie up sponsorship deals but were thrown out summarily.We knew the reason later,because all the CEOs were either from St.STEPHEN'S OR loyola, or Presidency,the IITians were still working their way up.I am glad that there are at least 300 IIT-ians working as CEOs of different companies now said Dr Rajan to thunderous applause from scores of IIT alumni assembled.
Being mother of an IITian[sumit] I am proud of it.

Yesterday is history.Tommorrow is mystery.Today is gift.That is why it is called the present.Make the most out of today.
TO realise the value of one year,ask astudent who has failed a grade.
TO realise the value of a month , ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby.
TO realise the value of one hour, ask the teacher who is taking a class.
TO realise the value of one minute, ask the person who has just missed the train.
TO realise the value of one second , ask the person who has just avoided an accident.
TO realise the value of one millisecond ask a person who has won a silver medal.
TO help us all gain an extra hour every day a clock manufaturer has created a watch measuring each minute at 57.6 seconds.The 2.4 seconds borrowed from each minute add up to 60 minutes at the end of each day.

FOR physics memorise the formulae and learn its correct application.Half a mark is given for writing correct formulae.Do not forget to mark the arrow inthe ray diagrams.Lear all the 3 rules for magnetic effect of current.

10 Tips For Efficient Learning


Learning is a lifelong skill. From birth and throughout life, a person goes on a journey of acquiring knowledge. How this knowledge is gained varies from one individual to another because each one is created unique.

There are some people who make little or no effort to learn and yet they do well in school. Others spend endless hours over their books but do not excel at all. Genes may have something to do with this, but more than the hereditary factor, it is the attitude towards learning that increases one’s ability to perform well. How one efficiently studies makes a capable learner. Here are a few tips to make the most out of learning:

1. Take care of your health

People, like machines, also need downtimes. Stress and fatigue due to studying for long periods of time render the brain less effective to absorb data. Hence, adequate rest should be taken. A healthy mind needs a healthy body - see to it that proper nutrition and regular exercise is always maintained.

2. Develop a passion for learning

One should have a thirst for knowledge in order for learning to take place. Attending classes every day, reading and studying for hours, and accomplishing assignments do not guarantee positive results if you do not have that craving or focus to learn. Self-esteem somehow triggers this passion. The higher your self-confidence is, the more challenged you will become to learn faster.

3. Find a study environment that is conducive

Elements in the environment play an important role in one’s quest for learning. A specific study area with ample lighting, privacy, and complete supplies and reference materials are but some essentials for a smooth and stress-free study time. A set routine should also be imposed. Assign a specific time during the day for study. Don’t just "fit it in" your schedule or else you’ll have no time at all.

4. Set goals and targets

In order for each learning experience to be realistic, it is wise to set goals for yourself - goals that are measurable, achievable, time-bound, and flexible. Prepare weekly schedules, taking note of deadlines. For example, to get high grades, extra effort must be taken in studying and preparing for exams.

5. Take breaks in between study sessions

The brain needs to be recharged once in a while as this is when it absorbs all data obtained from studying. Overexertion causes it to repel information and makes studying futile. Do not go on a study marathon. Instead, study in short but frequent sessions and take breathers in between.

6. Engage in study groups

Two heads are better than one – so goes the cliché. Learning with a group is synergetic. You get to share your opinions, ideas, and views, and at the same time it is a venue for clarifying mind-boggling matters. It is also more interesting and challenging because you gain different perspectives or outlooks.

7. Understand concepts instead of memorizing details

Most of the time, students pass exams and quizzes with flying colors. But after a while, their knowledge of the subject matter would already slip their minds. This is mainly due to a wrong approach to learning – that of memorization. Memorization is only short-term "disguised learning". If one develops the habit of understanding concepts rather than focusing on details, the learning process will flow smoothly and will have a long-term impact.

8. Use shortcuts

Applying shortcuts to your study habits maximize your learning skills. You accomplish more when you abbreviate in note-taking, when you focus your notes around ideas instead of taking them down verbatim, and when you put everything straight into your computer. In this day and age, we need to pack a lot of information into a very limited timeframe.

9. Manage your time wisely

Learning is an ongoing skill. Hand in hand with your goal-setting is allotting and managing your time for things to be done – projects to work on, homework to finish, and term papers and theses to submit. Time properly managed is time well spent. Even your time for socializing should be taken into consideration. Remember – all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!

10. Reward yourself

It is important to make the learning experience enjoyable whenever possible. Try out things that may spark that craving within you to learn – listening to music, perhaps, or engaging in a delightful snack – whatever may inspire you. Continuous hours of studying will not only make you weary but also make you lose interest.

The above tips show that devoting long hours to study does not necessarily yield productive results. Studying efficiently and effectively are the key factors to learning better.

GLOBAL public spending on education rose from a median 4.5% of GDP in 1999 to 4.9% in 2006, according to a new report by UNESCO, the UN's education agency. The poorest countries invested 3.5%, compared with 5.6% by the slightly richer middle income countries, and 5.3% by developed countries. But spending money wisely also matters. Huge inequalities exist between the richest and poorest within many countries. In India, a 17-22 year old in the richest quintile has had an average of 11.1 years in education, compared with only 4.4 years for those in the poorest quintile. This gap is also big in Peru and the Philippines. The difference in Bangladesh is similar to that in Nicargaua, a much richer country, showing it is using resources more effectively.

Outsourcing is a term used to describe almost any corporate activity that is managed by an outside vendor, from the running of the company’s cafeteria to the provision of courier services. It is most commonly used, however, to apply to the transfer of the management of an organization’s computer facilities to an outside agent. This transfer of management responsibility is frequently accompanied by a transfer (from the buyer of the outsourcing service to the vendor) of the specialist internal staff who are already carrying out that activity.

Outsourcing has three main advantages:

• The greater economies of scale that can be gained by a third party that is able to pool the activity of a large number of firms. It is thus frequently cheaper for a firm to outsource specialist activities (where it cannot hope to gain economies of scale on its own) than it is to carry them out itself. Some firms gain the economies of scale by taking on the activity of others, becoming an outsourcer themselves.

• The ability of a specialist-outsourcing firm to keep abreast of the latest developments in its field. This has been a particularly significant factor in the area of information technology, where technological change has been so rapid that companies’ in-house capabilities are hard pressed to keep up with it.

• The way that it enables small firms to do things for which they could not justify hiring full-time employees.

The most commonly cited disadvantage of outsourcing is the loss of control involved in derogating responsibility for particular processes to others.

Outsourcing is not a new phenomenon. Companies have outsourced their advertising, for instance, for almost as long as advertising has been in existence. According to one estimate, in 1946 only 20% of a typical American manufacturing company’s value-added in production and operations came from outside sources; 50 years later the proportion had tripled to 60%.

Much of the increase came from the outsourcing of IT functions. This was bolstered later by the outsourcing of other functions (such as logistics) that were in areas that themselves had a high degree of it content. Banks, for instance, began to outsource the IT-intensive processing of financial instruments such as loans or mortgage-backed securities. The savings from such moves could be dramatic. By deciding to outsource the origination, packaging and servicing of all its personal loans, both old and new, one British bank cut the average cost of processing by over 75%. In the car industry in the 1990s, firms with the biggest profit per car, such as Toyota, Honda and Chrysler, were also the biggest outsourcers (sourcing around 70% to various suppliers). Those that outsourced the least (General Motors, for example, which outsourced only 30% of its value-added) were the least profitable. TATA has virtually pulled out of Singur on account of protecting its outsourced functions. The land TATA project needed for its vendor park was as important as the project itself.

The nature of outsourcing contracts has changed over time. What started off as a straightforward arm’s-length agreement between a buyer and a supplier moved on to become structured more like a partnership agreement. In this, not only is any increase in the clients’ volume of business reflected in the outsourcer’s scale of charges, but both parties in some way share the risks and rewards of the outsourced activity.

Relationships like this vary over time and require firms to learn how to work together in entirely new ways. In the early 1990s, in a groundbreaking five-year outsourcing agreement with BP, Accenture (then called Andersen Consulting) took over responsibility for running the day-to-day operation of BP’s accounting systems. BP retained control of accounting policy and the interpretation of data for business decision-making. In return, Accenture guaranteed BP that it would reduce the cost of running the service by 20%.

Some firms have been so taken with the idea of outsourcing that they have left themselves with little to do. An American company outsourced the manufacture of its computers as well as the ordering, delivery and the accounts receivable. Only the design was left to be handled in-house. Question remains how much is too much?

BRAIN TUMORS

About brain tumors

A brain tumor is a growth of abnormal cells or normal cells in an inappropriate place in the brain. The growth may be malignant (cancerous) or benign (noncancerous). The brain and the spinal cord are the main components of the central nervous system (CNS). The brain is composed of a number of different types of cells and tissues. Any of these can form tumors. Some of the tumors are a combination of cell types.
According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), brain tumors account for 85 to 90 percent of all primary CNS tumors. A primary CNS tumor develops from cancer cells within the central nervous system rather than cancer cells that have spread (metastasized) to the CNS.
Tumors can occur in all areas of the brain. Each part of the brain controls certain functions, and tumors in these different areas disrupt the function of that area. The main areas of the brain are:
Cerebral hemispheres. Control speech, language, thought, reasoning and emotion. The left and right hemispheres also are responsible for muscle movements and interpreting sensory information.
Basal ganglia. Help control muscle movements.
Cerebellum. Controls coordination of movement and balance. This part of the brain helps coordinate large motor skills such as walking as well as fine motor movements necessary for speech and use of the fingers.
Brain stem. Contains bundles of nerves that transmit signals for control of muscles or feeling. This area also controls basic functions such as breathing and the beating of the heart.
Brain tumors can either develop within the brain (primary) or develop from cancer cells that spread to the brain (metastatic or secondary). Primary tumors may be noncancerous or cancerous. Metastatic brain tumors, however, can only be malignant. According to the NCI, metastatic brain tumors are much more common than primary brain tumors. It is estimated that metastatic brain tumors outnumber primary brain tumors by 10 to 1.
Despite their harmless-sounding name, benign tumors can create problems, such as compressing the spinal cord, blood vessels or other important structures. Even though they are not cancerous, they may need to be treated with surgery or other methods.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), approximately 20,500 malignant tumors of the brain or spinal cord will be diagnosed in the United States in 2007. Nearly 13,000 deaths from CNS cancers are expected in 2007. These types of cancer account for approximately 1.3 percent of all the cancers and 2.2 percent of all cancer-related deaths. These statistics include adults and children with CNS tumors.
The survival time for individuals with malignant brain tumors varies with the type of cancer. For example, according the ACS, the survival time for patients with low–grade (see Types and differences) is approximately six to eight years. The average survival rate for patients with glioblastomas is approximately 12 months.
In addition, the five-year survival for all people with brain cancer varies with age. The five-year survival rate refers to the percentage of patients who live at least five years after their cancer is diagnosed. Five-year rates are used by healthcare professionals as a standard means of discussing prognosis.

How do cholesterol levels get too high? What causes the “bad” cholesterol levels to be too high and “good” HDL levels to be too low? It’s a complex soup of family history and genetics, weight, dietary habits, exercise levels, and even how you handle stress.
You can’t get new parents, but you can make small, effective changes in the way you eat and move that can help bring high cholesterol levels under control. Diet is one of the biggest contributors to unhealthy blood cholesterol levels, especially saturated fats (found primarily in animal products such as meat, cheese and milk) and trans fats (found in many processed foods). Some foods, especially eggs, actually contain cholesterol, which can also raise blood cholesterol, but not as significantly as saturated fat does. Other foods and drinks actually lower “bad” or raise “good” cholesterol. Eating too many carbohydrates can elevate triglyceride levels, which is also associated with lower levels of good cholesterol (HDL). In addition, exercise, including weight training, can improve your cholesterol levels.
If those lifestyle changes don’t bring your levels all down to normal, your doctor may prescribe cholesterol-lowering medications. 
Cholesterol is a bit like sunlight — too much of it can cause problems, but it’s hard to survive without it. A small amount of cholesterol (made by your liver and transported through your bloodstream) is used by your body to create cell tissues and certain hormones, which is normal and healthy. But too much blood cholesterol, especially certain kinds, can build up in your arteries, making them more rigid (a condition called atherosclerosis) and eventually blocking blood flow entirely. A blocked artery to the heart can lead to a heart attack. A blocked artery to the brain can lead to a stroke. Both conditions could be fatal.
Whether these blockages occur depends in part on how the cholesterol is transported through your blood — in lipoproteins. Low-density lipoproteins (LDLs — the “bad” cholesterol) are like local commuter trains that make frequent stops, dropping off cholesterol “passengers” along the walls of your arteries. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs — the “good” cholesterol) are like one-stop express trains that sweep the cholesterol directly to your liver where it can be processed for removal from your body.
High LDL and low HDL levels put you at a greater risk for heart disease and stroke. That’s why you need to pay attention to each contributing factor to your cholesterol report, not just your total cholesterol reading. Cholesterol is measured in milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter of blood or mg/dL.

Discipline-Be firm,Be clear Be consistent

Children learn best by being given clear, firm and consistent direction from parents who are clear, firm and consistent in their approach. How to Discipline Children by Being Clear: Firstly find and maintain clarity within yourself and then follow through on simple, clear instructions. Clarify for your self what being clear means. It is about being plain, obvious, and understandable in a clear, short sentence that explains exactly what you mean. It isn't about maybe this or maybe that. Often parents have no idea that they chop and change their minds within minutes. To become clear about your own patterns of behavior, observe yourself and ask for your partner's help in this. "We are going to tidy up your toys in five minutes", is clear and direct. Follow this with, "Please help me tidy up your toys now" and it means just that. Be firm with yourself about this. It doesn't mean soon, or later, but now. I have seen parents give out this simple instruction, then become distracted themselves by a television program, conversation or magazine. What their children observe is parents saying one thing and doing another and this gives a much distorted message. Multiplied over many times each day, is it any wonder that children cease to follow simple instructions? How to Discipline Children by Being Firm: Firstly find and maintain firmness for yourself and then follow through with firm clear directions in a firm, clear tone. Clarify for your self what being firm means. To be firm is to be certain, definite, and determined. It is also being loving, kind and calm. It means saying no and meaning no, or saying yes and meaning yes and sticking to it. It's about now being now. How often does your no become perhaps, later, maybe giving in, next time, soon, or alright then? This is a very common fault in how to discipline children and again it leads to numerous mixed messages for children. Resolve within yourself and with your partner's help to ascertain how often you are both easily swayed into changing your decisions. Are you allowing your children to manipulate you? Imagine how simple your life will become when you are clear and firm within yourself. It is every child's right to KNOW they can trust their parent's boundaries. So firstly, become firm with your own boundaries and then apply this to your parenting discipline. "It is bedtime, (bath time, meal time) in five minutes" is a clear direction. Now follow through on this. Giving the direction in a calm, clear, firm tone of voice helps your children to understand that you mean what you say. Being firm is about being in control of both yourself and the situation. How to Discipline Children by Being Consistent: Firstly find and maintain consistency for yourself and then follow through with a firm, clear, consistent approach. Clarify for yourself what being consistent means. To be consistent is to be reliable, dependable and constant. These words immediately convey comfort don't they? Let's look at the opposite of being consistent. Contradictory, unpredictable, changeable. That's definitely lacking in comfort and safety. So how do you want to be seen by your children? To begin with it can seem quite time consuming to concentrate on clear, firm, consistent guidelines. Be aware that this is very true. It takes concentrated effort and time to change old habits to new ones, but if you maintain consistency, you will be very surprised how quickly new patterns of behavior are formed. Parenting Discipline In Summary: With parenting discipline we are teaching our children how to have self control, self discipline and to become self reliant, so they are able to make good choices for themselves. The only way children can learn to do this is by being given the opportunities for this learning. This means not over protecting them, or doing everything for them, but maximizing their opportunities to learn through personal experience and observation, even when this means making mistakes. Can you see the opportunities here to change some of your own patterns of behavior into superior ones? Clear, firm, consistent parenting is quality parenting.
